ARISE !
Every ardent seeker after Truth, everyone who wishes to enter into the Empire of Krishna, has to realise it fully well that Krishna is not the name of any known God, but that of the God most cherished by you; yes, you have to know Him—any how, any way, any where, not any when, but now itself.

Brahm, Our Mind

Brahm (सर्वंखल्विदंब्रह्म)is all pervading, each and every particle of the matter is permeated by Brahm. सर्वंहिएतद्ब्रह्म— whatever we perceive through our senses is Brahm. This disclosure by our ancient spiritual Siddhas is par excellence and this philosophical idea was imbued with religious belief by the majority of people. The initiator or Guru propagated the thought of Omnipresence of Brahm and those who had love for Devas automatically developed love for their Gurus — यस्यदेवेपराभक्ति: यथादेवेतथागुरौ.

The spiritual teachers in India have been able to inculcate a sense of love for Brahm or God. The fear of God was equally well potentized by the messenger of God for those who indulge in any type of bad practices. There is no thumb rule nor is there any line of demarcation between good and bad. How you feel and behave by any act or Karm done by you may decide whether the act done by you is good or bad. It is an endless discussion which will never terminate to prove what is good and what is bad.

To our members we wish to convey that you are the temple of God because you alone are linked to God directly. You are not aware that your unconscious mind has incalculable power, of which you are in the dark. You do not know that your unconscious mind is linked to the Universal Mind which we call God. You are, whatever you are, is the result of what you have thought. It is based on your thoughts, it is made up of your thoughts. People in general do not know that they have dual mental organization — One unconscious or subjective and the other conscious or objective. Fundamental difference in the working of these two minds may be stated as below.

The objective mind takes cognizance of the objective world. The media of observation are the five physical senses. It is your guide in the objective world if trained well. Its highest function is that of reasoning, inductive or deductive.

The subjective mind takes cognizance of its environment by means independent of the physical senses. It is the seat of emotions and storehouse of memory. It performs its highest function when the physical senses are in abeyance. In hypnotic or mesmeric trance state, the most wonderful feats of the subjective mind are performed. The subjective mind is incapable of inductive reasoning. It reasons deductively with extraordinary acumen.

Don’t you now feel what a wonderful creation you are? The working of the mind shows that you are somehow connected with the universal mind which is capable of presenting to you whatever you can think of. Realise it well that you being in touch with the Omniscient can do wonders if you but take trouble to get yourself trained earnestly and devotedly.

I now trust that it is deeply ingrained in your mind that it is made up of the Karm or thoughts that you feed to your mind. Mind being inseparable from the Absolute all that you pour into your mind is being recorded in the storehouse of the absolute. Activity of your mind is the cause of your mental state which is responsible for the Life that you lead. Any change per se will be brought about by changing the life-style that is the Karm that you persuade. To make a move towards spiritual path would be necessitated by a Guru because — गुरु भक्तिं सदा कुर्यात् श्रेयसे भूयसे नर: — following a Guru with devotion will always be auspicious and beneficial

SPIRITUALITY – By Vatulanand

We often engage in lofty discussions about yoga and spiritual discipline (sadhana), but we rarely pause to reflect upon its primary objective. The conventional answer is the attainment of the Divine (Bhagavat-prapti). While this is indeed the ultimate destination, the spiritual journey itself consists of numerous milestones that indicate whether we are progressing in the right direction. These milestones are recognized by the Guru, who has traversed the very path we now walk.

The path of sadhana is inherently simple; however, seekers initially perceive it as arduous because they remain trapped within their own mental conditioning. Without faith and conviction, the path inevitably appears insurmountable. Moving toward divine realization requires a degree of intense passion—a departure from ordinary social conditioning—because one must reduce their mental attachment to the material world.

To live in the world, acquiring wealth (Artha) and fulfilling legitimate desires (Kama) within righteous boundaries (Dharma) is necessary. Deprivation creates unnecessary obstacles to practice. Therefore, a householder must use their capabilities to pursue these goals before working toward ultimate liberation (Moksha).

Just as eyelids naturally protect the eyes, the senses require a protective boundary. When we close the doors of sense perception to external distractions, the outer world ceases to agitate our internal state. A seeker initiates yoga specifically to attain this self-mastery: first, sense control (Indriya-vashitva), which restrains the outward pull of the senses; and second, mind control (Mana-vashitva), which stabilizes the mind through practices like breath control (Pranayama).

Gaining mastery over the senses is a subtle art and the true test of a practitioner. Once the senses are controlled, a seeker naturally transitions into a state of purity, moving from the physical to the spiritual realm.

True enjoyment requires a calm, centered mind. Many people continuously pursue sensory gratification expecting it to deliver lasting happiness, unaware that pleasure and pain are experienced solely by the mind. When the mind is restless, even sensory pleasure fails to yield joy.

The mind becomes agitated when we fixate on what we lack rather than utilizing our current circumstances wisely. This pattern builds a deep internal dependency that persists even during rest and sleep, filling our dreams with unwanted thoughts and depriving us of peace.

When we envy the wealth of others, we assume they are happy, missing the fact that our own discontent colors our perception. Contentment (Santosh) is not a function of accumulated wealth; it is a mental state achieved through inner discipline. Contentment does not mean abandoning progress; it means recognizing that physical accumulation alone has never brought ultimate fulfillment to anyone.

Contemporary education focuses almost exclusively on material achievement, training individuals to seek immediate financial gain. In doing so, society neglects the profound law of action (Karma) articulated by ancient sages—a cosmic principle intended for all humanity. Ignoring these universal truths turns human focus away from divine contemplation and toward division and conflict.

Life is a mystery, and few stop to ponder how the cosmos operates or how our actions shape our trajectory. The underlying soul (Atman) is unified, yet it manifests uniquely in each individual due to the diversity of past actions (Karma). Differences in

The Kalpaka                                                                        4

thoughts, material conditions, experiences of joy and sorrow, and degrees of faith all stem from these accumulated impressions.

The body merely executes the commands of the mind and senses. As long as the senses rule the mind, material attachments trap the individual. Unaware of the true purpose of human life, people are naturally drawn to physical comforts, finding spiritual practices dry or unappealing. Abandoning spiritual wisdom for sensory attachment is like choosing poison over nectar; it inevitably leads to regret, disease, and sorrow.

The mind driven by unchecked desire is like a wild, unbridled horse—it inevitably throws its rider, leaving them in regret. Rather than becoming a slave to desires, a person must establish ownership over them using the reins of discipline. By limiting unnecessary desires, one masters the mind, uncovers the essence of existence, and realizes the divine unity (Sarvam Khalvidam Brahma).

Spirituality is not an optional pursuit; it is the essential framework for a meaningful life. Without it, human existence degrades to a purely animalistic state. By taking refuge in the ancient wisdom of Yoga as taught by Sri Krishna in the Bhagavad Gita, one restrains the wild inclinations of the mind, transcends material bondage, and experiences the ultimate fulfillment of self-realization. ***

Even after gaining vast knowledge and experiencing all that the world has to offer, a person will remain trapped in suffering if they fail to recognize themselves as an immortal spark of the Divine (Ishvara Ansha). But merely believing it changes nothing. Intellectual acceptance is not enough until that belief transforms into a living, direct experience. We are indeed divine in essence, but we have simply forgotten our true nature under the influence of worldly distractions.

This is where the practice of Yoga becomes essential. Yoga is not merely a set of physical exercises; it is a systematic methodology to remove the fog of ignorance and restore the memory of who we truly are.

When this truth is recalled through deep spiritual practice (sadhana):

  • Natural Attraction: Your life begins to align continuously along a path of higher evolution, drawing your mind naturally toward the Divine.
  • Profound Metamorphosis: As this internal shift takes root, an undeniable transformation occurs within your character, perception, and daily life.
  • Enduring Joy: You begin to taste a deep, unshakeable bliss (Paramanand) that far exceeds temporary sensory pleasures.

Human life is often defined by a persistent sense of lack—whether of wealth, health, peace, or purpose. We spend our lives trying to fill these voids with external objects, only to find new deficiencies taking their place.

True liberation from this cycle comes when we achieve Divine Consciousness (Bhagavat Chetana). Experiencing your unity with God root-causes the eradication of all worldly deficiencies. By elevating your awareness from the material plane to the realm of higher consciousness, external shortcomings lose their power to cause suffering. If you truly desire to erase every form of lack from your life forever, the path is clear: employ every spiritual method at your disposal to draw near to the Divine, dissolve the illusion of separation, and establish ultimate oneness with the Supreme..***

CONTEMPLATION  OF  OM – By A. P. Mukerji

The world cannot subsist without a religion. True Worship comes out of religion. It is deeply ingrained in human nature. The churches and temples we have all over the world are not the places of true worship. Our actions there are prearranged and programmed. True worship does not come out of any programme. It is the spontaneous outburst of every human soul and the fruit of true meditation.

The spirit in us is under evolution, having transgressed the stages of mineral, vegetable and animal. It does not stop at the inspiration of respect, regard and admiration or reverence that come out of holiness of life, purity of motives, sublimity of thoughts or mobility of character, but aspires to merge with the just, the true, the Infinite and the divine from which it sprang.

Owing to the teachings of many irresponsible men, the world has begun to worship many a false deity. Gods of imagination have sprung up and the true God of Nature is worshipped by none. The adorable being, to the study of whom we devote our life and whom all scriptures refer to is OM, the Eternal Omnipresent Being.

Now let us consider what this OM is and what constitutes the contemplation of OM. It cannot be more clearly explained than in the beautiful words of an adorable sage: “Om indicates the Ruler of the Universe. Is it by mere arbitrary convention, or by some natural process, just as light indicates the lamp or the source of light? Surely, the relation between the symbol Om and that of which it is a symbol, is not conventional but actual, and the symbol but expresses the actual relation. To take a parallel example, the relation between the father and the son is real. The relation really exists, even before we can express it in such terms as these. ‘He is his father, and he is his son.’ Even in the cycles of creation to come, since words signify things not arbitrarily but by a fixed natural standard, the same symbol, Om, is made to express the same idea, because it is an established fact, with those who know Revelation, or those Yogis who have realised what the relation between the signifying symbol and the thing signified is, that the words, their corresponding ideas, and the relation between them is eternal, or exists in nature, and not by human convention.”

And now as to the way of worship to Him, it is said: “The recitation of Om, and the constant presentation before the mind of its signification, these are the two means of His Upasana or worship. The Yogi who constantly does both, develops concentration, or, as has been elsewhere remarked, the aforesaid recitation and realization, develop concentration, and concentration facilitates realization, till, by the continual action and re-action of both, the light of the Supreme Divinity begins to fully shine in the Yogi.”

Om is the true essence of the Vedas. There is nothing more sacred, more inspiring to the Hindu than this word of deep significance and full of bliss. No Hindu ceremony or ritual is commenced without first uttering this mystic word Om. No Mantra in the Veda is read without a previous recitation of this holy syllable, Om. No Hindu dare utter this mystic emblem of the Deity-Om-when he is not pure in heart and body. There is no word in the whole list of earthly languages more melodious, soft and smoothly flowing than this most comprehensive and far-reaching epithet-Om. No education or training is required to utter this word of bliss. Even a new-born babe will follow repetition without the least difficulty. It is not because of these the word is selected, but because of its deeper, dearer and diviner significance.

The letters which have the fortune of forming this, ‘Om’ mark the successive stages of meditation which leads to the realization of Divinity. The process of this realization is quite contrary to that of the one which the mind works in this external world. This latter is called evolution and the other involution. In involution you draw your senses from the contemplation of the external objects and pass within and meditate Divinity, and this leads you gradually to the more interior and perfect realization of the Spirit—Divine Spirit.

Now we shall try to present to you a brief survey of the four planes on which the mind acts. Let us take the case of a typewriter maker. He has made the typewriter and the principles embodied therein are doing their work. Every piece of mechanism of the typewriter shows the skill of the maker and it is impressed therein; the forces and mechanical principles that were at the disposal of the inventor are living in the machine and manifested by the regular work they do. This is the outward and first manifestation of the maker’s skill. Thus the impress of the spirit is outwardly shown and this is called the “WAKEFUL PHASE.”

Now again the inventor of the machine must have made a design at first and must have drawn the necessary bits of information from his store of knowledge. Again he should have contemplated freely before he put his idea into a working basis, and this is termed the “CONTEMPLATIVE PHASE.”

This is not the only thing. There must have been a time in his life when he had not the least idea of the machine itself. His brain must have been full with stores of knowledge unarranged and unapplied. The principles embodied by him in the working of the machine were not the only ones he knew. He could have known a great deal about various subjects too numerous to mention. The idea that took shape and proved could have been only a fragment, and he has been in possession of a store of knowledge. Could he have been cognisant of the massive information he had at his disposal? Decidedly not! Only in moments of deep contemplation and bright recollections a fractional portion of his stored-up experiences has been called forth before his mind and the most proportioned of his cognitions have been latent. And all of them have been at his disposal and he could easily bring forth into play many things that were latent in him only if he had put forth the proper effort to do so. This latent state is termed the “SLUMBERING PHASE.”

Beyond and behind these WAKEFUL, CONTMEPLATIVE and SLUMBERING PHASES resides the TRUE REALITY, SUBSTANCE, THE SPIRIT; the TYPE WRITER MAKER, IN ESSENCE. You come across and pass daily these four stages. In broad daylight your mind is fully awake; you see, hear, smell, taste and feel, and this is the Waking Stage; then at the night-fall, fatigued from the day’s work, you retire to bed, and unconsciously sleep steals over you and you begin to dream; and this is the Contemplative Stage ; a little later the dream passes away and you fall into a deep slumber: now all the activities of the mind and the brain cease, not entirely, but to commence work at the next opportunity, and this is the Slumbering Stage. Now, I believe, my reader! I have given you a clear idea of the four stages in which the mind acts. Thus your life counts day after day, night after night, of wakeful – activity, disturbed of sound slumber; – and amidst such an oft-recurring change and manifestation a sort of independence is maintained and preserved by you because you are the essential existence and these all are nothing but passing scenes of accidents to you. Know, my friend! that the Spirit exists in all these stages.

The Wakeful, Contemplative and the Slumbering stages form, respectively, the Elementary, Intermediate and Advanced ones leading to the realisation of the essential spirit. The materialist scientists of the day work in the Wakeful Phase, the Elementary Stage. When they come well acquainted and the mind familiarises with this initial stage, then only the philosophical perception of the interior design of nature will dawn upon them. Then by degrees contemplating on this philosophical stage, they will rise to the ‘Fountain of all principles, the Essential Divinity embodying all in ONE.’ The syllable Om which is composed of the three letters A, U and M, respectively, represents the three stages referred to, the recitation and contemplation of which necessarily leads you through the right way to merge into the one and become one with the One.

For want of time and space I have to bring this article to a speedy end and cannot better finish it than to end with the saying of a renowned sage: “He who contemplates (A), the 1st matra of Om, contemplates God in the wakeful phase, soon becomes wise, and even, after death, is re-born as man, the lord of creation, and, by virtue of his previous Upasana, leads a life of devotion to study, of control of passions and anger, and of search after truth, and, thus virtuously circumstanced, experiences the pleasures of noble nature. He who contemplates (U), the 2nd matra of Om, or God in the contemplative phase, obtains a glimpse of the interior world of causes, and is, by virtue of this Upasana, transported to the spiritual World, and, after experiencing exaltation there, is reborn as man. But he who contemplates (M), the 3rd matra of Om, views God as Himself, becomes illuminated and obtains Moksha. Just as a serpent relieved of its old skin, becomes new again, so the Yogi, who worships the third matra, relieved of his mortal coil, of his sins and earthly weaknesses, free with his spiritual body to roam about throughout God’s Universe, enjoys the glory of the All-pervading Omniscient Spirit, ever and evermore.

Bhakti Yoga Lesson IX – By Bhikshu

LESSON  IX Synopsis: On Sharanagati–Self-surrender–Not the outcome but the culmination of Fatalism–Surrender the End (purpose) of Life–It comes in times of danger–But here God comes into man–Life does not end with death but continues in God–Krishna Gati the life in God. A greater concept than the mere redemptive side of Christianity. The need for understanding the phenomenon of Death as a surrender unto God. This makes man a Hero. The Mantra for the lesson.

On Sharanagati

Budham saranam gaschami sangham saranam gaschami dhammam saranam gaschami Om Mani Padme Hum chants the ancient Buddhist; thus hath he been taught; thus is the doctrine of sharanagati the taking refuge in the Lord, the taking refuge in the Church (ekklesia), in the World, the taking refuge in the Law, in the moral order that the Buddhist is convinced governs the world. Translated into religious language, sharanagati is the Act of surrender to God.

It is the natural evolving of the doctrine of fatalism, the other expression of the fact that one cannot, is not able to do, or finds restriction in the way of doing what one likes; one in doing what he likes encounters the “marginal error,” the “unseen factor,” the “unaccounted host,” by whatever name it may be called-Destiny is its crude name. And it has specially to be noted that “the belief in fate does not seem to be ultimately due to an intellectual conviction that the powers which rule human life and life’s battle are material and blind, but to the practical necessity, if one is going to get one’s work done and maintain one’s reason, of believing that one’s fate is controlled by an over-ruling power. The man throws off (Tyaga) his cares, even his personal cares on a Power mightier than exploding mine and bursting shell.

Fatalism is not a negative creed, it is not the calm beautiful evening of the religion of the cow, but a religion of the warrior; soldiers have to be fatalists elsewise they would be madmen; fatalism has always been a very good antidote to steady men’s nerves in danger. Fatalism was a fighting creed long before the days of the high explosive; it nerved Islam in its tremendous career of conquest, and in its Calvinistic form it put iron in the blood of the Puritan and the Huguenot. One remembers too the faith in his destiny and “star” of the greatest soldier (Napoleon) of modern times. In other words in this strange appearance of faith in predestination in an age which has apparently forgotten that the ancients also were men and knew enough to have a Word of God to abide by, we seem to have, in however obscure and inverted a form, something which reminds us of Christ’s words: “The very hairs of your head are all numbered; hear ye not therefore-seek ye first the kingdom of God,” and of Krishna’s words in the Gita. Ch. XI.

Herein is the teaching of the ancient Gita— Anta kale at the hour of the “End,” the fulfillment of life toil, comes God. In times of danger, of the “approaching” end, men cry out to God. In many cases they have never been absolutely in earnest before in their lives; they have been brought face to face with death and while there they have spoken to God and they never will be quite the same afterwards. This is the ultimate of the religious experience of Sharanagati, rather the religious experience that arises out of the surrender that is sharanagati. And the surrender is a giving up of all the kalevara, all the clogs he had about him such as his possessions, his house and home, his wife and children, his body, and more than all these, of his soul, of all his Values, of all that he esteemed till then, which become at that time mere clogs.

This aspect of the religious consciousness of Bhakti is in general awakened by the sheer sense of helplessness, sankate ghore, in danger and need –but it is further stated by the Bhakti Yogins that it does not come to men so much as a refuge in hours of danger as in moments when, if they had to “carry on” as they had to do to endure beyond the limits of human strength, things had to be done which it seemed could not be done. At such times God came into. the void and with His coming a new spring of moral energy was opened, that spring which the Text-book of Bhakti Yoga known as Bhagavata calls Krishna, which the nominal Christians are not able to find in Christ.

To the religious consciousness, it is utterly impossible that so great a thing as life, as we in the days of modern civilization are experiencing it, could end with death. The conviction grows, not merely as a resentment against the sudden break in the delights of life that death causes, the sudden dislocation of the universe by this accident called death, not merely as a protest against the helplessness of the “idea” taught by the cemeteries, and the absolute nothingness that is left of a friend, as a result, say, of an explosion, that to believe in the eternal value of the individual is really difficult, but in the strangeness of the instinct that death cannot be the end, for there is else no God.

To nearly all of us it is not that we believe in a future life, not that we know there is a life beyond death, but that this life beyond death is a Life in God– a life of God. Death here ceases to have any terror; it is the call of God to his forces to abandon their leisure and their sports and turn to that higher better life for them and in Him that is possible after death, a life in God, in the Path of God, Krishna Gati. Here one abandoning his body, his clogs, meets God, sees him, senses him alone, and thenceforth lives in Him. Such a view is against the common teaching of Hell; eternal torment would here be absurd; death is not the end but a junction where one changes carriages. Is there beyond death immortality or future chances for service–this few can see ahead at the moment of death; but the content of the immortality is overwhelmingly impressed on the religious consciousness of the Bhakti Yogi.

It is only by the teaching in the Gita (IX.11) of the great need of man to God, of how very much God is dependent on the human form and the human life-experience for His Purposes, that man gets at a positive religion. That man is of great value in God’s sight, that He has come down many a time through the centuries, as Krishna, Budha, Jesus, to tell him so, that God is close beside him (Gita, VII.2) “closer than breathing, nearer than hands and feet,” his companion, that Man is the solace and refuge of God (madasrayah), is the teaching of the Gita. It further adds that every man is the embodiment of the Purpose (anta), the special work that God wants man to do, for which God incarnated in Man; that God desires to use Man’s powers, his leadership, organization, popularity, perseverance, personality, all that man is proud of possessing, that it is for God to choose his Man and that choice is the moment of fulfillment of purpose, anta kala.

Specially does the teaching of Bhakti Yoga present the greatness of a wonderful concept, the concept of Sharanagati. The concept is greater than that of the crucifixion of Christ, and the appeal of the Cross, though strong, has no effect on the redemptive side, of the teaching it intends to convey. The attraction of the Cross to the warrior in the battle of life is in the main that of a wounded hero, a fellow sufferer in a good cause- but the sharanagati of the Bhakti Yogi is the statement of the fact that God has surrendered himself to man, has incarnated in him, filled him with life, informed his thoughts, enthused his thoughts, made experience inform into him, so that he may gather the harvest at death at last into his being, God is not the fellow-sufferer but the sufferer during life of the body during the purposeless dull life that goes on somehow, with a little of this and a little of that, of the life that is gone beyond recall by nightfall, that is the life of the most today.

Ah, could we but connect the symbols the great ones have given us since the time of the ancient  Gathas and  Vedas with the knowledge that  is growing today, that has overgrown the dead creeds of the religions of the world, the knowledge that fills and overflows the hearts of men today, what a great Empire could we not have created, what a great empire it shall be that we shall create hereafter. There must be more known about sacrifice and suffering, known now by men than since the days of the ancient Yajnas and yasnas, than any past time, but is it not all isolated, disconnected, and have there not been attempts to hide it out of human knowledge?

Yes, God is the help of Sacrifice; with him is the usefulness (adhi) of Sacrifice (Yajna); with Him is Destiny (daiva) the usefulness of that destiny that appears to us to cause our sorrow, that destiny that the Islam calls kismet and the Jain Buddhist Karma. He is the friend, useful to every, tiny life-cell that attempts to live together into the body, to partake of the joint experience (adhi-bhoota) and most especially is He realized in the experience of the Prayana-kala, the time when one leaves all that he has or is, as in death, trance, sanyasa.

This is the tenet that nowhere is Life stronger than at the moment of Death, the peremptory going-forth (Prayana); it is stated not as a paradox but as a matter of experience of men throughout the religions, throughout the centuries. In Buddhism the last thought, the thought at death was believed to have a determining effect on the individual, and the Hindu has followed the idea out into his religious philosophical creed and argument. The absurdness of taking the Gita, verse 8 (yam yam va api smaran bhavam tyajati ante kalevaram- tam tam eva eti-sada tad bhava bhavita) has not been fully followed out and the fault is, of course, with hasty readers. It is not that the last thought at death is to be followed out in another life but that the last thought in life is a collective thought, the unfulfilled portion of the Purpose in life that will be working out its fulfillment in the beyond after death.

What goes forth at death is the Greater Being, the Collect of the Beings that have come-to-be in the body, the Adhi Bhoota; it is the lord of its destiny from the moment of death, adhi daiva; it is the sacrifice, adhi yajna, the crucified Christ transfigured from glory to glory; it is a Glory that has been perceived, that can be perceived, that the Soul or spirit perceives after death, the glory of the Soul that staggers into the friendly bosom of God, ever more than half ready to meet it more than half way beyond the veil (mist or maya) between appearance and reality, the veil at the threshold of the fourth dimension.

Says an army officer: “The comradeship with death is the most potent but not the only circumstance of the battle field which alters the spiritual balance. The limbo of the soldier’s vaguer feeling is intensely colored by a sense of unspeakable impotence in the face of gigantic forces of destruction. Nowhere as in a great army does a man’s littleness and unimportance stare on him so startlingly. Nowhere as on a battle field is there such evidence of the powerlessness of the mightiest human organization to protect his own small individuality. A millimeter’s deflection in the laying of a gun is the difference between life and death to him. He knows how a shell will burst to pieces between two men, blowing one to pieces yet leaving the other unhurt and amazed.

He has crouched in holes, listened to the hum of a thousand unseen menaces under the placid stars-what eats into his soul is the knowledge that this violence is blind. Chance, the soldiers God is once more the God of battles who clothes himself with the storm; he is not the judge of righteousness or wrong, not the friend of the fatherless nor the widow’s protector, not holy nor just nor good but simply the controller of all the forces of nature that burst away from the grasp of man; the Lord of fate and the master of Life and death–and this the soldier finds out only at the Last moment (anta kala), when having thought till then how powerless God was, albeit he was kind, he found Him mighty to save the moment he was beckoned as at Death.”

This chapter applies specially to the Hero, Dhira, which term includes the wise man, the man who is not afraid to meet death, and to such a hero the simple virtues and truths that are the mainspring of every religion are given true place in his inner life. Loving one’s neighbor as one self, unselfishness, humility in the true sense of self-forgetting and gentleness, all these the hero sees; the possibilities in self-sacrifice, the need for God, the certainty born of close acquaintance that death is not the end, all these are more than a part of the hero’s uninterrupted awareness; unselfishness and fellowship especially the fellowship of God (as the sakha) he knows all about, in his own way.

It is a revelation to many what a live thing God is for to live men; they have come to feel, partly through our time-worn creeds and ceremonies, partly through our special garbs and vestures and churches and set modes of worship, and part through their own shortsightedness that this religion in a church is not necessary for normal life and so they have ignored it, just as they have ignored all types of current exoteric religion, just as they will in the very near hereafter abandon all current types of new thought, theosophy, spiritualism, esoteric religion. The man who has known God has no more care for saving his soul, no more care for anything else than saving the world for God. The cry of the Bhakti Yogi is

SARVE JANAH SUKHINA BHAVANTU!

डॉक्टर संजीवी का कथन है कि ‘Common sense is the most uncommon thing.’
